Description
South by Southwest (SXSW) has grown from a tiny music festival in the Texas capital into a massive, unavoidable media beast that reflects, discusses and showcases trends in culture and media but also often creates them.
SXSW consists of three main pieces: Interactive, Film, and Music. The primary event you'll hear about on Twitter is the Interactive portion (#sxswi) which runs from March 13-17, 2009. SXSW is held each year in Austin, Texas.
The first SXSW was held in 1987 and has been an annual event since. In its inaugural year, a mere 700 participants registered. In recent years, that number has swelled to as high as 12,000 registrants. It began as a music festival but added film and interactive portions in 1994.
