WTH:Usage

What the Hashtag?! actively creates new pages based on trending Twitter hashtags, but its up to you to explain what they mean.

Contents

The Structure of a Hashtag Page

New pages created on WTH?! follow a basic template, listing the time of discovery (or time of creation if added by a user), a section for the hashtag to be described, a place where similar or related hashtags can be linked, a list for external links relating to a hashtag and finally, the latest tweets and TwitPics tagged with the hashtag in question.

Description

This is the most important part of WTH?! and the reason it exists. People see trending hashtags or topics being used by those they follow, but there's hardly ever a clear, central definition for what it means. Fill in the details about what the hashtag stands for here.

Related Hashtags

If there are similar or directly related hashtags, those links will go here. Pages for hashtag variations may only have a small amount of information, then a link to the main hashtag page.

External Links

If a hashtag was created or has been claimed by a company, organization, group or individual, there may be an official website or external web property that needs to be included in the hashtag page. It it can provide additional, helpful information regarding a hashtag, include it.

Tweets

These are the source of all of the confusion, but also what drives things to trend in the first place. WTH?! will pull down the last ten tweets using the specified hashtag and include them here. Twitter avatars link out to full profiles and timestamps will link directly to said tweets.

TwitPics

Though slightly harder to track than tweets, the TwitPics for a hashtag are determined by TwitPic's own tagging system. WTH?! looks at the keywords a picture has been tagged with and assumes that tags matching a Twitter hashtag should belong together.
